Soludo Approves FG-ASUU Agreement for Ojukwu University From 2027
Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has approved the full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU agreement at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University from January 2027, following years of delayed implementation at the state-owned institution.
Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has approved the full implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU for staff of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, effective January 2027.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Harrison Madubueze, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, saying the approval was communicated to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kate Omenugha, through the Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Peter Onwualu.
Omenugha welcomed the decision, expressing appreciation to the governor and the leadership of the university’s labour unions. She said the approval fulfilled earlier assurances concerning the implementation of the agreement.
The university management noted that previous administrations had not fully implemented the Federal Government-ASUU agreement at the Anambra State-owned institution, despite repeated commitments.
It described Soludo’s approval as a significant step towards improving staff welfare and strengthening the university’s academic environment.
The governor’s decision aligns with his administration’s stated commitment to making teaching a respected profession by ensuring that educators receive appropriate motivation and remuneration.
The university said the implementation formed part of broader efforts to improve its structures, systems and academic standards, with the goal of developing the institution into a globally recognised university.
The Federal Government and ASUU reached a renegotiated agreement in 2025 following prolonged discussions over university funding, lecturers’ welfare, remuneration and working conditions. The agreement was formally unveiled in January 2026.
While federal universities fall under the Federal Government, state-owned institutions such as Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University depend on their respective state governments to determine the implementation of agreements affecting their staff.
The approval is expected to provide greater clarity for university employees regarding the implementation of the agreement from 2027 and support efforts to improve working conditions at the institution.
