Residents of Abuja have observed a significant surge in security activity over the last 24 hours, with additional checkpoints, "show of force" patrols, and rigorous stop-and-search operations at major entry and exit points of the city.

The increased presence of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigerian Army, and the Department of State Services (DSS) has been particularly visible along the Airport Road, Kubwa Expressway, Nyanya-Mararaba axis, and the Giri-Gwagwalada corridor.

Addressing the concerns of commuters and residents, the FCT Police Command explained that the deployment is a preventive measure based on strategic intelligence.

Security sources indicate that the move is intended to intercept criminal elements following recent successful raids on bandit camps in border communities surrounding the FCT. By tightening the "ring of security" around the city, agencies aim to prevent any retaliatory attacks or the influx of fleeing suspects into the city center.

“The heavy security presence is not intended to cause panic but to provide a sense of safety and to deter any planned criminal activity,” a senior security official stated. “We are acting on intelligence and ensuring that all sensitive locations, including government installations and public spaces, are fully protected.”

The Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the operations are part of "confidence-building patrols" aimed at reassuring the public of their safety. She noted that the synergy between the various security arms is at an all-time high to ensure that the FCT remains a "no-go area" for terrorists and kidnappers.

The command urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with officers at various checkpoints, even as it acknowledged that the rigorous searches might cause slight delays in travel time.

Military analysts observe that the current deployment follows the Nigerian Army’s recent declaration of **104 soldiers as deserters** and the intensifying hunt for terror commanders in the North-Central region. By saturating the FCT with personnel, security chiefs are reportedly implementing a "Border Shield" strategy to ensure that the nation's seat of power remains insulated from the volatility in neighboring states.

While the checkpoints remain active, security agencies have appealed to the public to be the "eyes and ears" of the law. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious individuals or movements to the emergency hotlines provided by the FCT Command.

“Security is a collective responsibility,” the police statement added. “While our men are on the ground, we need the cooperation of the public to provide real-time information that can help us stay ahead of those who wish to disrupt the peace of the capital.”

As of the time of this report, the heavy patrols are expected to continue through the weekend as part of a wider security master plan for the second half of 2026.
