Ruth Kadiri Says Lavish Weddings Put Pressure on Marriages
Nollywood actress Ruth Kadiri has urged couples to consider modest weddings, warning that expensive ceremonies can create financial and emotional pressure and affect married life.
Nigerian actress and filmmaker Ruth Kadiri has cautioned couples against spending excessively on weddings, saying the pressure associated with elaborate ceremonies could affect their well-being and marriages.
Kadiri shared her views in a post on Instagram, where she highlighted the financial and emotional demands that often accompany wedding preparations.
She observed that couples could spend considerable time building relationships before marriage, only for their circumstances or behaviour to change after the wedding.
“Big weddings put pressure on couples and the marriage itself, and I don’t think people realise that. People can date for years, but after the wedding, some people change,” she said.
The actress encouraged intending couples to prioritise their peace of mind and the future of their relationships rather than feel compelled to organise expensive celebrations to satisfy societal expectations.
She warned that attempting to meet the demands associated with lavish weddings could place unnecessary strain on couples, particularly when they spend beyond their financial capacity.
Kadiri's comments also highlighted the importance of considering the long-term responsibilities of marriage when planning wedding ceremonies, rather than concentrating primarily on the scale of the celebration.
The actress has previously spoken about her preference for privacy in her personal life. She revealed in an earlier interview that she and her husband opted for a small wedding attended by 50 guests, a decision she said helped protect their relationship from external pressure.
She explained that keeping her marriage largely away from public scrutiny had allowed the couple to define their relationship without undue outside influence.
Kadiri's latest remarks encourage couples to approach wedding planning with realistic expectations and focus on building stable relationships rather than measuring their celebrations against those of others.
