Ronaldo Deserves Beautiful Farewell From Portugal — Bruno Fernandes

Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes has called for Cristiano Ronaldo to receive a fitting farewell when the veteran forward eventually decides to end his international career.

Fernandes said he hoped Ronaldo would not leave the national team following the recent controversy surrounding his departure from Portugal’s training camp.

The Manchester United midfielder said Ronaldo’s eventual farewell should be a celebration of his extraordinary contribution to Portuguese football rather than an ending marked by disagreement.

“I hope Cristiano does not leave the national team… and when or if he wants, it should be on a beautiful day to celebrate Cristiano, not like this,” Fernandes said.

He also described Ronaldo as the biggest icon in Portuguese football, stressing the respect he continues to command among the national team and supporters.

Fernandes’ comments came after Ronaldo unexpectedly left Portugal’s camp after coach Jorge Jesus told him he would not start the Nations League match against Denmark. Portugal went on to win the game 4-2 without their captain.

Ronaldo’s decision sparked speculation about his future with the national team, although Fernandes rejected suggestions of a serious division within the squad.

He said he had spoken directly with Ronaldo and urged Portuguese supporters not to allow the situation to divide the country.

Fernandes stressed that Ronaldo’s importance to Portugal goes beyond his performances on the pitch, describing him as a figure who has left an enduring mark on the country’s football history.

The 41-year-old Ronaldo is Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player. He has won major international honours with the country, including the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles.

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has also indicated that the door remains open for Ronaldo to return to the squad. The coach described the disagreement as something that could be resolved and said the decision about Ronaldo’s future ultimately belongs to the player.

The Portuguese Football Federation has similarly backed Ronaldo, with president Pedro Proença describing him as an icon and saying he remains part of the national team whenever he is fit and available.

With Portugal’s current international fixtures completed, attention will now turn to whether Ronaldo returns for the team’s next matches.

Fernandes believes that whenever Ronaldo finally chooses to say goodbye, it should be marked by the kind of celebration befitting one of the country’s greatest football figures.
