Rivers Police Dismiss Four Officers Over Fatal Shooting Of Student
Rivers Police dismiss four officers after investigation finds them culpable in the fatal shooting of graduate Anthony Obodo.
The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed four officers over the fatal shooting of Anthony Obodo, a fresh University of Port Harcourt graduate, during a police pursuit in Port Harcourt.
The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, announced the disciplinary action during a press briefing, saying investigations established the culpability of the officers involved. He added that the dismissed personnel would be charged to court to face criminal proceedings.
The incident occurred on August 27, 2026, when a patrol team from the Agip Police Division reportedly sighted a black, fully tinted Lexus vehicle. The team attempted to stop the vehicle for a routine check, but it allegedly sped away, prompting the officers to give chase.
During the pursuit, Corporal Alfred Louis allegedly opened fire at the vehicle. A bullet struck the driver, identified as Anthony A. Obodo, who sustained serious injuries.
Obodo was rushed to Palmer’s Hospital in Port Harcourt, where he received medical attention. However, he was later pronounced dead by a doctor.
The police identified the personnel involved as Assistant Superintendent of Police Fabian Kpeanabari, Inspector Solomon Nworgu, Corporal Alfred Louis and Police Constable Michael Ejokwu.
Following the shooting, three members of the patrol team were arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation. Inspector Nworgu reportedly absconded after the incident, leading the police to intensify efforts to locate him.
Adepoju said the officers were subjected to an orderly-room trial after the investigation and were found culpable. Their dismissal followed the disciplinary proceedings, while criminal prosecution is expected to take place separately in court.
The police commissioner expressed condolences to Obodo’s family and assured them that the command would ensure justice is served. He stressed that no police officer is above the law.
The development follows demands for accountability over the death of the young graduate. The police command said the action demonstrates its commitment to professionalism, respect for human rights and protection of lives and property.
Authorities are expected to proceed with the criminal case against the dismissed officers as the investigation continues. The court proceedings will determine any further legal responsibility arising from the shooting.
The case has renewed attention on police conduct during vehicle pursuits and the need for officers to exercise restraint when dealing with members of the public.
