Portuguese Football Federation Backs Ronaldo to Continue With Portugal

The Portuguese Football Federation has reaffirmed its support for Cristiano Ronaldo’s continued involvement with the national team following the forward’s recent departure from the squad.

Federation president Pedro Proença described Ronaldo as an icon of Portuguese football and said the 41-year-old remains part of the team whenever he is fit and available.

Proença also defended Ronaldo’s place in the national team, saying his selection is based on his sporting merit and performances.

The comments come after Ronaldo unexpectedly left Portugal’s training camp last week following a disagreement surrounding his role under new head coach Jorge Jesus.

Ronaldo had been an unused substitute during Portugal’s victory over Norway and was informed that he would not start against Denmark. He subsequently left the camp after speaking with Proença and later said he would explain the reasons for his decision “in due course.”

The incident sparked speculation that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner could bring his international career to an end, despite his previous indication that he still wanted to contribute to Portugal.

However, Proença played down the disagreement, describing it as a misunderstanding that should be resolved internally.

He stressed that Ronaldo remains an important figure for Portugal and said the forward had demonstrated his commitment to the national team throughout his career.

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has also left the door open for Ronaldo’s return. Following Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday, Jesus said Ronaldo would be able to return if he wanted to, stressing that the decision ultimately rests with the player.

Jesus said he had previously told Ronaldo that he needed him around the team, whether he was playing or not.

Portugal have already secured qualification from their Nations League group after winning their four matches in the current cycle. The team’s next fixtures are scheduled for November.

Proença said the end of the current international window provides an opportunity for Ronaldo, Jesus and the federation to resolve their differences.

He reiterated that Ronaldo remains part of Portugal’s football legacy and will continue to have a place in the national setup as long as the coach wants him and his sporting merit remains intact.
