Police Recover AK-47, Mercedes-Benz After Robbery Operation in Ogun
The Ogun State Police Command has recovered an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and a Mercedes-Benz GLK following a robbery operation in Ota that left one suspected robber dead.
The Ogun State Police Command has recovered an AK-47 rifle, two rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and a Mercedes-Benz GLK during a follow-up operation after a robbery incident in Ota.
The recovery was announced on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, who said the unregistered vehicle was searched, leading to the discovery of the firearm and ammunition.
The development followed an earlier operation in Ijaba, Iyesi, Ota, in the early hours of Sunday, November 1, when police operatives responded to a distress call from a resident reporting a robbery.
According to the police, officers attached to the Onipanu Division, under the Ota Area Command, arrived at the scene at about 1:45 a.m. but came under gunfire from the suspected robbers.
The operatives returned fire, killing one suspected gang member, while other members escaped with suspected gunshot injuries.
A search after the encounter led to the recovery of a Nissan Almera and a Toyota Camry, as well as a locally made pistol, two live cartridges and seven spent cartridges.
Other recovered items suspected to have been stolen included HP and Dell laptops, a PlayStation console, four mobile phones, a Samsung television, a standing fan, a rechargeable radio and a Wi-Fi device.
The police also recovered clothing, an OPay ATM card and other household items, alongside a Tecno mobile phone, three passport photographs, an MTN SIM pack, two National Identification Number cards and cash found on the deceased suspect.
Babaseyi said investigations were ongoing to establish the ownership of the recovered vehicles and property, as well as determine their possible links to other criminal activities.
He added that the command had intensified efforts to track down the fleeing suspects, particularly those who might have sustained gunshot injuries.
The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their response and professionalism, while reaffirming the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and the protection of lives and property.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information about suspicious activities to support crime prevention efforts.
