Obi Urges Nigerians to Replicate June 12 Election Credibility in 2027
Peter Obi called on Nigerians to replicate the transparency and credibility of the June 12, 1993 election in 2027, urging citizens to assess the state of democracy.
Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged Nigerians to work towards replicating the transparency and credibility of the June 12, 1993 presidential election during the 2027 general elections.
Obi made the call in a Democracy Day message shared on his X account on Friday, stressing that the annual commemoration should serve not only as a celebration of democratic progress but also as an opportunity for national reflection.
According to him, Nigerians must use the occasion to assess the state of the country’s democratic institutions and determine whether governance is truly meeting the expectations of citizens.
The former governor described the June 12, 1993 election as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, noting that it remains widely regarded as one of the freest, fairest, and most credible elections ever conducted in the country.
Obi challenged electoral and democratic institutions to examine whether present-day elections measure up to the standards established by the historic poll.
He also urged citizens to reflect on whether elected leaders have fulfilled the promises made to the electorate and whether government policies are improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate argued that democracy should be judged by the quality of governance, accountability, transparency, and the ability of leaders to respond to the needs of the people.
According to him, the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and other Nigerians who fought for the restoration of democratic rule should inspire efforts to strengthen democratic values and institutions.
Obi maintained that credible elections remain the foundation of any functioning democracy and stressed the need for electoral processes that reflect the true will of the people.
He therefore called on Nigerians, electoral authorities, political parties, and other stakeholders to work collectively toward ensuring that future elections are transparent, peaceful, and credible.
The former presidential candidate expressed optimism that Nigeria could deepen its democratic culture by building on the ideals represented by the June 12 struggle.
He noted that achieving a free and fair electoral process in 2027 would honour the legacy of those who fought for democracy and help strengthen public confidence in the nation’s democratic system.
Obi concluded by encouraging citizens to remain actively engaged in the democratic process and continue demanding accountability from public officials.
