NSCDC Warns Miners Against Illegal Operations
The NSCDC Mining Marshals have warned mining operators nationwide that violations of mining laws will attract prosecution, regardless of claims of ignorance.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has warned mining operators across the country against engaging in illegal activities, saying offenders will face prosecution for violating mining laws and regulations.
The warning was issued by the Commander of the NSCDC Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant of Corps John Attah, following intensified enforcement operations nationwide aimed at curbing illegal mining.
Attah said the specialised enforcement unit had recorded progress, particularly in the South-West, in ensuring that mining activities complied with existing laws and regulatory requirements.
He warned operators against operating outside the legal framework, stressing that ignorance of the law would not protect offenders from prosecution.
The commander said the enforcement campaign was aimed not only at tackling illegal mining but also at protecting legitimate investors, improving government revenue and restoring confidence in the solid minerals sector.
He said compliance with mining laws was essential to ensure that Nigeria’s mineral resources were exploited safely, sustainably and in a manner that benefited the national economy.
Attah noted that illegal mining remained a major challenge, contributing to revenue losses, environmental degradation and the exploitation of mineral resources outside the regulatory framework.
The NSCDC said the renewed enforcement drive formed part of broader Federal Government efforts to reform the solid minerals sector and unlock its potential as an alternative source of revenue and foreign exchange.
