Nigerian Teachers Race for $1 Million Global Teacher Prize as October 12 Deadline Nears

With just one month remaining until the October 12, 2026 deadline, Nigerian educators are being strongly encouraged to apply or be nominated for the prestigious GEMS Education Global Teacher Prize. The $1 million award, now in its 11th edition, recognizes outstanding teachers worldwide who have made a transformative impact on their students and communities. Organized by the Varkey Foundation, the prize has received over 100,000 applications and nominations globally since its inception in 2015, and the 2027 edition promises to be the most inclusive yet.

A significant development for the 2027 cycle is the strategic expansion of eligibility criteria to reflect the evolving landscape of modern education. While conventional classroom teachers remain the core demographic, the prize now explicitly welcomes digital educators, leaders of educational programs, and teachers working in refugee camps or other non-formal education settings. Furthermore, part-time, contract, and self-employed educators are now eligible to compete, provided they meet the foundational requirements. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of teaching experience and work with learners aged four to 18. 

Assessors will evaluate applicants based on the effectiveness of their teaching methodologies, innovation in overcoming educational challenges, measurable improvements in student learning outcomes, and their broader impact on the community. Additional weight is given to contributions that foster global citizenship, promote peace, and elevate the public recognition of the teaching profession.

Nigeria has consistently punched above its weight in this global competition, cementing its reputation as a hub of pedagogical innovation. In the 2026 edition, Adeola Olufunke Akinsulure, a dedicated Biology teacher at Omole Senior Grammar School in Ikeja, Lagos, achieved a historic milestone by being named among the Top 10 finalists. Selected from a staggering pool of over 5,000 nominations across 139 countries, Akinsulure was celebrated for her pioneering work in STEM education, girls’ empowerment, and environmental learning. 

Notably, she developed the innovative SOAR+T teaching model, which has since been utilized to train more than 30,000 teachers across Nigeria and beyond. She was joined on the 2026 shortlist by Tijjani Mohammed Mukaddas, who secured a spot among the Top 50 finalists, further highlighting the depth of educational talent within the Nigerian system.

The 2026 Global Teacher Prize was ultimately awarded to Indian educator Rouble Nagi, who was selected from the esteemed international field of finalists. Following her victory, Nagi issued a direct call to action for Nigerian educators, urging those whose work is changing the lives of young people to step forward for the 2027 award. She also encouraged students and parents to actively nominate the teachers who have made a lasting, positive difference in their lives.

Sunny Varkey, founder of the Global Teacher Prize and the Varkey Foundation, emphasized that the award was established to spotlight the critical role teachers play in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges, including systemic inequality, climate change, and rapid technological transformation. 

“The expanded criteria reflect the changing ways educators reach and support learners, including through digital platforms and community-based settings,” Varkey noted, underscoring the foundation's commitment to recognizing teaching excellence in all its forms.

The selection process for the 2027 prize is rigorous and highly competitive. It will begin with the announcement of a Top 50 shortlist, followed by a refinement to 10 finalists. The ultimate winner will be selected by the prestigious Global Teacher Prize Academy.
