Nigeria Remains Africa’s Top-Performing Nation at Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Nigeria has maintained its position as Africa’s highest-performing nation at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after an impressive medal-winning campaign during the opening seven days of competition.

According to the National Sports Commission, Team Nigeria has won a total of 16 medals, comprising eight gold, five silver and three bronze medals.

The haul places the country fifth on the overall medals table while making it the best-performing African nation at the Games.

Nigerian athletes have secured podium finishes across several sporting disciplines, including Para Powerlifting, Weightlifting, Athletics, Boxing and 3×3 Basketball.

The country’s performances have been highlighted by a series of memorable achievements, including world-record-breaking displays, historic victories and determined performances against some of the Commonwealth’s strongest competitors.

Among the standout moments was Goodness Nwachukwu’s gold medal-winning performance in the women’s F42 discus event, where she shattered her own world record to successfully defend her Commonwealth title.

Shot put star Chukwuebuka Enekwechi also made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s shot put event.

Nigeria’s para-athletes have continued to dominate their respective events, contributing significantly to the country’s medal tally and reinforcing the nation’s reputation as a powerhouse in para sports.

The boxing and weightlifting teams have also delivered crucial medals, while the country’s 3×3 basketball squad has impressed with strong performances against top-ranked opponents.
