Veteran Nigerian actor, dramatist, filmmaker, and university professor, Kola Oyewo, has died at the age of 80, marking the end of a remarkable career that spanned more than six decades in theatre, film, and academia. His passing was confirmed on June 12 by actor Kunle Afod.


Born on March 27, 1946, in Osun State, Oyewo began his acting journey in 1964 with the Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group before becoming one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nollywood.


He gained widespread acclaim for his portrayal of Odewale in the classic stage play The Gods Are Not to Blame, a role that earned him recognition across Nigeria and beyond. He also featured prominently in acclaimed productions such as Saworoide and several other Yoruba-language films.


Beyond acting, Oyewo built a distinguished academic career. He earned degrees from Obafemi Awolowo University and the University of Ibadan, later serving as a lecturer and professor of dramatic arts at several Nigerian universities.


Just months before his death, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu celebrated Oyewo on his 80th birthday, describing him as a cultural icon whose contributions helped preserve and promote Nigeria’s rich artistic heritage.


Tributes have continued to pour in from actors, filmmakers, students, and admirers who remember him as a gifted performer, mentor, and scholar whose influence shaped generations of Nigerian creatives.


Oyewo's legacy remains deeply woven into the history of Nigerian theatre, film, and cultural education, ensuring that his contributions will continue to inspire future generations.
