NDC Slams APC Over ₦1bn Toyota Prado SUVs For Youth Leaders

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) following the distribution of brand-new Toyota Prado sport utility vehicles to selected youth leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The opposition party estimated the value of seven vehicles displayed in a video shared by APC National Youth Leader Dayo Israel at approximately ₦1.015 billion, arguing that the reported expenditure raised questions about political priorities amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.

In a statement published on Sunday, October 25, 2026, the NDC said the vehicles were worth about ₦145 million each based on its estimate of the average price of a 2026 Toyota Prado.

The party said its calculation was based on seven vehicles visible in the video, adding that the total number distributed could be higher. However, the estimated value was presented by the NDC and was not independently confirmed as the actual purchase price or total cost of the vehicles.

Israel had announced that he presented the vehicles to selected youth leaders to support their election mobilisation activities. He also acknowledged the support of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu for the party’s structure under his leadership.

The NDC accused the APC-led administration of prioritising expensive benefits for political figures while many Nigerians continue to face rising living costs and economic hardship.

The opposition party argued that the reported distribution contrasted with calls for citizens to endure the effects of government economic reforms. It questioned whether such spending reflected the priorities of a government expected to address unemployment, poverty and other pressing challenges.

The NDC also used the controversy to promote its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, saying he was committed to reducing the cost of governance if elected.

The party urged Nigerians to consider the issue ahead of the 2027 elections, presenting the reported vehicle distribution as a matter of public accountability and responsible use of resources.

The controversy has renewed debate over the cost of political mobilisation, benefits provided to party officials and the need for transparency in political spending. The available information, however, does not establish whether the SUVs were purchased with public funds or financed through party resources or private contributions.
