NDC Reschedules Campaign Council Inauguration Over Obi’s Overseas Engagement
The Nigeria Democratic Congress has postponed the inauguration of its National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections from October 20 to October 26 because of presidential candidate Peter Obi’s overseas engagement. The party apologised for the change and urged members to remain focused on preparations for the elections.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has postponed the inauguration of its National Campaign Council for the 2027 general elections by six days, citing the overseas engagement of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, announced the change in a statement issued on Monday, explaining that Obi’s tight schedule and an important engagement abroad necessitated the adjustment.
The inauguration, initially scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, will now take place on Monday, October 26.
Director said the party regretted any inconvenience caused by the postponement and urged its members and supporters to remain committed to its preparations for the forthcoming elections.
He called on party faithful to maintain their focus on securing electoral victories for Obi, his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and other NDC candidates.
The inauguration was originally planned to coincide with a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), where key decisions concerning the 2027 elections were expected to be ratified.
At the meeting, the party had also planned to present Certificates of Return to its candidates and hold a dinner aimed at strengthening cooperation among them ahead of the electoral contest.
The postponement comes as political parties intensify efforts to organise their campaign structures and prepare for the 2027 general elections.
NDC National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, had earlier said the party was committed to establishing an effective campaign structure and dismissed claims that it was inactive or divided.
He explained that the party’s National Working Committee had held several meetings since August and submitted proposals on the composition of the campaign council for consideration by its leadership.
The party has also said that the council’s structure was being developed in consultation with Obi and Kwankwaso, with the aim of coordinating campaign activities and strengthening cooperation among candidates and party officials.
