Messi Confirmed As New Owner Of Spanish Club CD Eldense
Lionel Messi completes acquisition of Spanish second tier club CD Eldense, subject to regulatory approval from sports authorities.
Lionel Messi has completed the acquisition of Spanish second tier football club CD Eldense, marking a new chapter in the Argentine star’s growing involvement in football club ownership.
Eldense announced the development on Thursday, confirming that Messi had acquired the club from its previous majority shareholder, Colombian investment group TH Soluciones Group S.A.S.
The transaction remains subject to the required authorisation from Spain’s National Sports Council before the takeover becomes fully effective.
Messi, 39, previously became the owner of Spanish fifth tier club UE Cornellà in April 2026. His acquisition of Eldense expands his involvement in Spanish football beyond his playing career.
Eldense, founded in 1921, described Messi’s arrival as the beginning of a new chapter in the club’s more than century long history.
The club said the new ownership would pursue a long term project focused on sporting, institutional and social development while maintaining its traditional identity and connection with the local community.
Messi’s takeover comes as Eldense compete in Spain’s Segunda División. The club have struggled for results at the start of the campaign and are currently battling to avoid relegation.
The former Barcelona and Argentina captain continues to play for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer while expanding his interests in football club ownership.
His move into club ownership places him among a growing number of prominent football figures who have become involved in managing and investing in professional teams.
However, Messi’s ownership of Eldense does not mean the club will be able to spend without restrictions in the transfer market.
Spanish football’s financial regulations, including salary limits and other financial controls, will continue to govern the club’s operations.
The takeover was initially announced in September as an agreement in principle, pending legal procedures, due diligence and approval by the Spanish sports authorities.
With the acquisition now announced, Messi is set to oversee a new phase in Eldense’s development, subject to completion of the remaining regulatory process.
