Makinde Pledges One-Term Presidency, Challenges Tinubu on Fuel Prices

Oyo State Governor and Allied Peoples Movement APM presidential candidate, Seyi Makinde, has pledged to serve only one four-year term if elected President in 2027, promising to establish an inclusive government of national unity.

Makinde made the commitment at the APM North-East town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, where he also challenged President Bola Tinubu to make the Federal Government’s petroleum pricing template public.

He said Nigerians deserved relief from economic hardship and transparency over how petrol prices were determined, arguing that the government should make its pricing framework available for public scrutiny.

The governor said expertise in addressing the country’s challenges was not limited to people holding public office, adding that citizens outside government also had ideas and solutions that deserved consideration.

Makinde criticised the Tinubu administration’s policies on compressed natural gas (CNG), electric vehicles and the naira-for-crude initiative, arguing that they had not delivered the expected results. He also recalled the President’s pledge to improve electricity supply within four years.

He said the 2027 election should usher in a different approach to governance, with greater transparency and honesty about the country’s challenges.

Makinde further pledged that an administration led by him would accommodate Nigeria’s diverse interests and avoid concentrating political power in one section of the country.

He described his proposed government as transitional, with a mandate not exceeding four years, and said the APM had delayed releasing its manifesto to allow consultations with stakeholders before finalising its policy proposals.

Earlier, APM National Leader and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, said the party was strengthening its position in the opposition, citing its elected officials and growing membership.

Mohammed urged supporters to rally behind the party’s presidential ambition and said it was committed to national unity, mutual respect and equal opportunities for Nigerians.

The party’s vice-presidential candidate, Lawal Daura, also called for a fundamental change in the country’s direction, describing the APM as a platform for Nigerians seeking a new approach to governance.
