Lagos E-Hailing Drivers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Fares
E-hailing drivers in Lagos have commenced an indefinite strike over fares, platform commissions, deductions and welfare, with their union urging fleet partners to suspend penalties against drivers participating in the action.
E-hailing drivers in Lagos State have begun an indefinite strike over concerns about fare structures, platform commissions, deductions, safety and working conditions.
The industrial action was announced by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress, in a notice issued ahead of the strike’s commencement on Monday.
The union said the decision followed persistent concerns about operational policies, drivers’ earnings, welfare, security and the sustainability of their work, adding that previous efforts to resolve the issues had yielded insufficient progress.
AUATON said the action would continue until further notice or until satisfactory progress was made in addressing the grievances.
To reduce the financial pressure on drivers during the shutdown, the union appealed to fleet owners and managers to suspend daily remittance obligations and related operational targets for the duration of the strike.
It also urged fleet partners not to impose penalties, sanctions or other adverse measures solely because drivers had participated in the industrial action, noting that those who stopped working would not generate their usual revenue.
The union announced plans to deploy its task force across all local government areas in Lagos to monitor compliance with the strike directives. It warned that drivers who operated in violation of the directives could face internal disciplinary measures.
However, AUATON encouraged drivers, fleet owners and managers to maintain communication and pursue constructive engagement to resolve the disputes.
The union said improved fares, earnings and working conditions could strengthen driver retention, reduce turnover and improve vehicle utilisation. It added that better financial conditions could also support vehicle maintenance and reduce disputes between drivers and fleet partners.
AUATON Lagos State Chairman, Jaiyesimi Olalabi Azeez, popularly known as Makavelli, signed the notice and appealed to fleet partners for understanding and cooperation.
The union maintained that its objective was not to disrupt businesses unnecessarily but to secure sustainable operating conditions for drivers and other stakeholders in the app-based transport sector.
It reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful engagement and dialogue, urging stakeholders to work towards lasting solutions to the issues behind the strike.
