Lagos Agency Introduces Toll-Free Line for Consumer Complaints

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has introduced a toll-free helpline for residents to report fake, expired, adulterated and counterfeit products, as well as other consumer-related violations.

The agency’s General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, Mr Afolabi Solebo, made the call in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos.

Solebo urged residents to report suspected violations through the toll-free consumer helpline, 080 0005 2726, saying the channel would provide consumers with direct access to the agency for complaints, guidance and timely intervention.

He said complaints could also be submitted through the agency’s email and social media platforms, while urging residents not to rely solely on social media when dealing with consumer protection issues.

According to him, complaints should be supported with verifiable evidence to facilitate investigation and enforcement.

He listed useful evidence to include receipts, invoices, photographs or videos, product labels, proof of payment and screenshots of transactions, advertisements or conversations with sellers.

Solebo said the helpline could be used to report fake and counterfeit products, expired or adulterated goods, defective products, misleading advertisements and unfair business practices.

Other complaints that could be reported include poor services, online shopping disputes and other suspected violations of consumer rights.

The LASCOPA boss advised consumers to verify product details, prices, sellers and terms and conditions before making payments, particularly when purchasing goods and services online.

He also urged residents to examine product labels carefully, including manufacturers’ details, manufacturing and expiry dates, batch numbers, ingredients and usage instructions.

Solebo said credible and timely complaints would assist the agency in detecting violations and taking appropriate enforcement action.

He described consumer protection as a shared responsibility involving government, businesses and consumers, urging Lagos residents to remain vigilant and actively participate in efforts to safeguard the marketplace.

He said residents should question suspicious products and report suspected violations promptly to the agency.
