Kofi Acheampong: the teacher who built a library in a fishing village
A retired schoolteacher's dream to bring books to children in a remote Brong-Ahafo fishing village has grown into a community library serving 400 students.
In the riverside community of Mampong-Akyem in the Brong-Ahafo Region, a modest building stands as testament to one man's stubborn dream. Kofi Acheampong, a retired primary school teacher, spent his entire pension building what is now the Mampong Community Library.
Starting with 80 donated books stored in his living room, he wrote over 300 letters to NGOs and embassies. Today the library holds 4,200 books, has internet-connected computers and a reading garden.
This year, five of the library's alumni were admitted to university — the first from their village in living memory.
