Kebbi NUT Dismisses Viral Video on Poor Education Funding as Doctored

The Kebbi State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT has dismissed a viral video alleging poor funding of education and inadequate remuneration of teachers in the state.

The state NUT Chairman, Mr Zaki Sarki, in a statement on Monday, described the video as old, edited and doctored to create a false impression about the performance of the state government in the education sector.

Sarki said the claims contained in the video were misleading and amounted to an attempt to discredit the administration of Gov. Nasir Idris.

He alleged that the video was being circulated by individuals sponsored by opposition politicians seeking to incite teachers and other workers against the government.

The NUT chairman said the allegations failed to acknowledge what he described as significant interventions by the Idris administration in the education sector since it assumed office.

He said the state government had improved teachers’ welfare by reviewing salaries to N75,000, describing the development as a major intervention in workers’ welfare.

Sarki also cited the construction of mega schools across the four emirates, more than 2,500 classrooms, the recruitment of over 2,000 teachers and the provision of furniture and other learning materials as evidence of investment in education.

He said the union rejected the video and its contents, urging those making claims about education in the state to verify available records before drawing conclusions about the government’s performance.

Sarki said the NUT remained committed to engaging with the state government on issues affecting teachers while supporting policies aimed at improving education.

He urged opposition politicians and other critics to distinguish between legitimate criticism and the circulation of manipulated materials capable of misleading the public.

The controversy comes amid renewed attention to teachers’ welfare and education funding as Nigeria joins other countries to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day.
