Kano Tailor Targets Guinness World Record with 120-Hour Sewing Marathon

A Kano-based fashion designer, Abdulkadir Hassanul Basari, is attempting to set a new Guinness World Record through a 120-hour sewing marathon aimed at supporting education and promoting vocational skills.

The five-day challenge, tagged Sew for the Nation, began on Wednesday, October 7, and is scheduled to end on Monday, October 12, at the sports complex of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria, Kano.

Basari, Chief Executive Officer of Basari Apparels and Textiles Nigeria Limited, announced the initiative in a video shared on his social media accounts on October 1.

He said the project was designed not only to achieve a world record but also to provide school uniforms for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds attending public schools.

According to him, the initiative demonstrates how vocational skills, determination and purposeful enterprise can contribute to community development.

Basari described the challenge as an opportunity to inspire young Nigerians, artisans and aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue their ambitions while using their skills to address social needs.

He is seeking to surpass the recognised record of 106 hours, 55 minutes and 20 seconds, achieved by Nigerian tailor Oluwaseun Kuforiji and officially recognised in March 2025.

If successful, Basari’s 120-hour attempt would exceed the existing record by more than 13 hours.

However, completing the marathon would not automatically guarantee recognition. Guinness World Records must review and verify the evidence submitted in accordance with its requirements before confirming any new record.

The initiative has drawn attention to the potential of Nigeria’s fashion and garment-making industry to combine entrepreneurship, skills development and social impact.

Basari has urged members of the public to support the project as he seeks to complete the five-day challenge and contribute to educational opportunities for vulnerable pupils.
