June 12: SDP Urges Nigerian Leaders to Uphold Democratic Ideals, Honour MKO Abiola
The SDP urged Nigerian leaders to uphold democratic values and honour MKO Abiola’s legacy, describing June 12 as a symbol of freedom, justice, accountability, and credible elections.
The Social Democratic Party has called on political leaders across Nigeria to govern with integrity, patriotism, and unwavering commitment to democratic principles as the nation marks the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
The party made the appeal in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Zakari Yau Nadabo, stressing that June 12 remains one of the most significant dates in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
According to the SDP, the annual commemoration should serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by Nigerians who fought for democracy, freedom, justice, and good governance.
The party noted that June 12 holds a special place in the nation’s political history and within the SDP itself because the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola contested and won the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election on the platform of the party.
It described the election as the freest, fairest, and most credible poll ever conducted in Nigeria, adding that it remains a benchmark for democratic credibility and popular participation.
“As we commemorate this important day, we pay tribute to the courage, sacrifice and patriotism of all heroes of democracy who stood firm in defence of democratic ideals during one of the most challenging periods in Nigeria’s political history,” the statement said.
The SDP also honoured pro-democracy activists, journalists, civil society organisations, and ordinary Nigerians whose contributions helped restore democratic governance after years of military rule.
The party stressed that Democracy Day should not be limited to celebrations but should also provide an opportunity for national reflection on the state of governance and democratic institutions.
It urged Nigerians to recommit themselves to the values that inspired the June 12 struggle, including justice, transparency, accountability, inclusion, national unity, and respect for the will of the people.
The SDP further called on elected officials at all levels of government to prioritise the welfare of citizens and strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions through responsible leadership.
According to the party, the best way to honour the legacy of MKO Abiola and other democracy heroes is to ensure that democracy continues to deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.
The statement concluded by encouraging citizens to remain actively engaged in the democratic process and continue defending the principles upon which the June 12 struggle was built.
