Joshua, Fury to Earn Record-High Career Paydays
Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are set to receive the biggest purses of their careers when they meet in a December 11 heavyweight clash in Cardiff, according to promoter Frank Warren.
British heavyweight boxers Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury are set to earn the biggest paydays of their careers when they finally meet in a long-awaited showdown on December 11 at Principality Stadium in Cardiff, according to promoter Frank Warren.
Warren, who has promoted boxing for nearly five decades, said the financial rewards attached to the bout were substantial enough to overcome several setbacks that had threatened to derail the contest.
The fight, backed by Netflix and Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh, follows years of failed negotiations between the two former world champions. The contest is expected to be one of the biggest events in British boxing.
“We nearly did it a couple of times, and it just did not happen for various reasons,” Warren said, adding that the size of the purses made the agreement particularly significant.
He described the financial rewards as “phenomenal” and said he believed the fighters would receive the highest purses of their careers, potentially making the bout the biggest payday for British fighters in boxing history.
The fight had faced uncertainty over its location and the involvement of UFC President Dana White, with organisers initially considering Madison Square Garden in New York.
However, Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, maintained that an existing agreement required the bout to be staged in the United Kingdom without White’s involvement. Warren later helped secure the Principality Stadium as the venue.
The 70,000-capacity stadium is expected to host the fight, although negotiations have reportedly continued over the ring-walk time to accommodate a prime-time television audience in the United States.
Joshua and Fury have been linked with a potential fight for more than a decade but repeatedly failed to reach an agreement. Both fighters have also faced Oleksandr Usyk, who defeated each of them twice during his heavyweight reign.
