Iran Executes Man Linked to Anti-Government Protests
Iranian authorities have executed Siavash Jamshidi, who was convicted of firing a military-grade weapon at police during anti-government protests earlier this year.
Iran has executed a man convicted of several offences, including firing a military-grade weapon at police officers during anti-government protests earlier this year.
The man, identified as Siavash Jamshidi, was sentenced to death after being convicted of moharebeh, a legal term referring to “waging war against God”, as well as conspiracy and collusion against national security.
Iran’s judiciary said Jamshidi had brandished and fired a firearm during the unrest. The judiciary’s Mizan Online website also said he was convicted of offences unrelated to the protests, including fraud, making threats, theft and the possession and carrying of an illegal military-grade weapon.
Other charges included complicity in kidnapping, brandishing a weapon to intimidate others and intentionally causing bodily harm.
Mizan said Jamshidi had been active during demonstrations that began in December last year over grievances including the cost of living and reached their peak on January 8 and 9.
Iranian authorities reported more than 3,000 deaths during the unrest and blamed the violence on what they described as terrorist acts orchestrated by the United States and Israel.
Foreign-based non-governmental organisations, however, have disputed the government’s account, saying Iranian security forces fired on protesters during the demonstrations.
Iranian authorities have increased arrests and executions of people linked to the protests since the unrest.
The executions have continued amid wider tensions involving Iran, the United States and Israel, including a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran in late February that triggered a broader Middle East conflict.
According to Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty, Iran executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, the highest annual figure recorded in the country since 1989. Amnesty International says Iran carries out more executions than any country except China.
