Inter Rally Late To Down Fiorentina, Regain Serie A Lead
Inter Milan scored twice in stoppage time to defeat Fiorentina 2-1 at San Siro, reclaiming top spot in a dramatic Serie A comeback.
Inter Milan produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat Fiorentina 2-1 on Sunday, October 25, 2026, scoring twice in stoppage time to return to the top of the Italian Serie A standings.
Marcus Thuram equalised in the 91st minute before Piotr Zielinski converted a penalty in the 98th minute, completing a remarkable turnaround for Cristian Chivu’s side at the San Siro.
Fiorentina appeared poised to claim a surprise victory after Alex Jimenez put the visitors ahead in the 65th minute with an outstanding long-range strike that beat Inter goalkeeper Ivan Provedel.
Inter had dominated much of the encounter but struggled to convert their chances, with Fiorentina goalkeeper David de Gea producing several important saves to frustrate the hosts.
De Gea denied Pio Esposito and Thuram during the first half and continued his impressive performance after the restart, keeping out another dangerous effort from the French forward.
Despite Inter’s attacking pressure, Fiorentina took advantage of their opportunity to move ahead. Jimenez’s powerful angled effort flew into the top corner, leaving the home side facing the prospect of a damaging defeat.
Inter responded by increasing the pressure. Carlos Augusto struck the crossbar with a header, while substitute Petar Sucic was denied by De Gea as the hosts searched desperately for an equaliser.
Their persistence finally paid off in the first minute of added time when Thuram guided a low finish into the bottom corner to make it 1-1.
The forward then won a penalty after being brought down by Victor Valdepenas inside the area. Zielinski stepped up and converted from the spot in the 98th minute, sending the home supporters into celebration and securing all three points.
The victory lifted Inter to 22 points, level with Lazio but ahead on goal difference, restoring their position at the summit after Lazio had temporarily moved top with a win over Parma on Saturday.
For Fiorentina, the defeat extended their winless run in the league to four matches and left them in 18th place with four points.
Inter’s late victory underlined their determination to remain in the title race, while Fiorentina were left to reflect on a performance in which they defended resolutely for much of the match but ultimately surrendered their advantage in the closing moments.
