Hamilton Hopes to Challenge Verstappen for Bahrain GP Win in Malaysia
Lewis Hamilton says Ferrari must manage tyre degradation carefully but hopes to challenge pole-sitter Max Verstappen for victory in Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Lewis Hamilton says he hopes Ferrari can stay close enough to Max Verstappen to challenge for victory in Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia after qualifying on the front row at Sepang.
Hamilton produced what he described as probably his best qualifying lap of the year to secure second place, 0.298 seconds behind Verstappen, who claimed Red Bull’s first pole position of the 2026 season.
The result means Hamilton and Verstappen will start alongside each other on the front row for the first time since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix.
However, Hamilton expects the race to present a different challenge because of the high tyre degradation at the Sepang International Circuit.
The Ferrari driver said his car appeared to have an advantage through some corners but suffered from a lack of straight-line speed compared with the Red Bull.
He said Ferrari would therefore need to avoid pushing excessively in the corners in an attempt to compensate for the deficit on the straights, as doing so could accelerate tyre wear.
Hamilton said Verstappen had shown strong long-run pace and was likely to have the advantage, but added that he would be pleased if Ferrari could remain in contention.
“If that's different when we start the race and we're able to hold on and we're in the fight, that'd be awesome as well,” Hamilton said.
The seven-time world champion said the extreme heat and the abrasive Sepang surface were making tyre management particularly demanding, with the tyres overheating from the beginning of each stint.
Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur also played down the importance of qualifying position, saying Sunday’s result would depend more on race pace, tyre management and degradation than Saturday’s performance.
Verstappen, meanwhile, said Red Bull’s objective was to win after securing his 49th career pole and first of the season.
The Dutchman said the race would not be straightforward, with several factors still capable of affecting the outcome, including tyre management and the demanding conditions.
Verstappen is seeking his first Grand Prix victory of the 2026 season, while Hamilton will attempt to convert his front-row start into another victory at Sepang.
The Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia is scheduled for Sunday at 8 a.m. Nigerian time.
