At least five miners have been killed and two others injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Marit village, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack occurred at about 1 p.m. on Saturday while the miners were carrying out their activities at the site.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association, Mr Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the incident, saying five people lost their lives while two others sustained injuries.

He described the incident as a painful development that had thrown the community into mourning and raised fresh concerns over the safety of residents and workers in the area.

A community member, Mr Simon Mundat, also described the attack as devastating and called for stronger security measures to protect residents carrying out legitimate activities.

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks reported in parts of Plateau State in recent weeks.

In a related development, security operatives and local hunters recently repelled an attack by suspected terrorists on Latok community in Qua’an-Pan Local Government Area.

The latest attack has renewed concerns over the security of mining communities in the state, particularly those operating in areas where security challenges have persisted.

As of the time of the report, efforts to obtain official confirmation from security agencies were unsuccessful.
