Guinea-Bissau Defeat Nigeria 3-0 In AFCON Qualifier

Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria 3-0 on Tuesday in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group L encounter at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro in Bissau.

The Djurtus took control early and opened the scoring in the 15th minute through Franculino Djú, who curled a left-footed effort into the far corner beyond Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Nigeria struggled to produce a response before the break, although Ademola Lookman came close to equalising after being set up by Alex Iwobi. Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Djoco Embadjé made a crucial save to preserve the hosts’ advantage.

The Super Eagles returned for the second half looking to level the contest, but Guinea-Bissau continued to pose the greater attacking threat.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 66th minute when Mama Baldé received a pass from Mamadi Camará before cutting into the area and firing a low shot into the net.

Nigeria coach Eric Chelle made several changes as he attempted to change the direction of the match. George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika were introduced in the 75th minute, while other attacking options were also brought on as Nigeria searched for a way back.

Ilenikhena nearly pulled one goal back in the closing stages, but Embadjé again produced an important save to deny the young Nigerian forward.

Guinea-Bissau then completed the victory in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Álvaro Djaló received a through ball from Tamble Monteiro before finishing with his right foot to make it 3-0.

The result gives Guinea-Bissau maximum points from their first two matches and puts them at the top of Group L. Nigeria remain on three points after opening their campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar.

The defeat represents a major setback for the Super Eagles, who were hoping to build momentum after their opening-day victory.

With Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 tournament as a co-host, Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are competing for the group’s remaining qualifying place.

Nigeria will now need to regroup and improve ahead of their next Group L fixtures as the qualifying campaign continues.
