FG to Unveil QR-Based Certification Framework to Boost Exports

 Federal Government is developing a national Halal framework that will introduce a Quick Response (QR)-based certification system for Nigerian products as part of efforts to strengthen exports and improve access to international markets.

The Special Assistant to the President on Export Expansion, Aliyu Sheriff, disclosed this in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, during the Malaysia International Halal Showcase, MIHAS 2026.

Sheriff said the proposed framework would provide a digital mechanism for verifying certified products and tracking them through relevant stages of the supply chain.

He explained that the initiative was designed to strengthen confidence in Nigerian products among international buyers while helping exporters meet certification and traceability requirements in global markets.

According to him, the government is working to position Nigeria more competitively within the expanding global Halal economy by developing systems that support standardisation, certification and market access.

The QR-based system is expected to allow buyers and other stakeholders to verify certification information digitally, providing greater transparency around the origin and compliance status of products.

The initiative forms part of broader government efforts to increase non-oil exports and diversify Nigeria’s sources of foreign exchange.

The government has identified the Halal economy as an area with significant opportunities for Nigerian businesses, particularly in agriculture, processed foods, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, fashion and other consumer products.

Sheriff said establishing a recognised national framework would also help address some of the challenges Nigerian exporters face when attempting to enter markets where internationally accepted certification is required.

The framework is expected to involve relevant government agencies, industry stakeholders and certification bodies, with the aim of establishing standards that can support both domestic compliance and international recognition.

The Federal Government also wants Nigerian exporters to take advantage of opportunities presented by the growing demand for Halal-certified products around the world.

The digital certification component is expected to make verification easier while reducing reliance on physical documentation and improving confidence in the authenticity of certification claims.

Officials said the initiative would complement ongoing measures to expand Nigeria’s export base and enable local producers to compete more effectively in international markets.

The government is expected to provide further details on the implementation of the national Halal framework as consultations and preparations continue.
