FG Releases ₦38.93bn To Upgrade 166 Tertiary Institutions

The Federal Government has released ₦38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions nationwide under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund, in a move aimed at improving educational infrastructure and strengthening learning conditions.

The disbursement covers 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education. The funds are earmarked for approved projects designed to address infrastructure shortages and other identified institutional needs.

According to the breakdown provided by the Federal Ministry of Finance, universities account for the largest share, receiving a combined ₦28.5 billion. The 46 polytechnics have been allocated ₦5.8 billion, while the 41 colleges of education are to receive ₦4.7 billion.

The ministry said the intervention forms part of the Federal Government’s efforts to address funding and infrastructure challenges in public universities and implement measures agreed under its Memorandum of Understanding with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The funding is expected to enable beneficiary institutions to commence or continue approved projects, including improvements to facilities needed for teaching and learning. The government said the initiative is intended to strengthen institutional capacity and contribute to better-quality tertiary education.

The Ministry of Finance also stressed the importance of coordination between the finance and education ministries and the beneficiary institutions to ensure the funds produce measurable improvements in educational infrastructure.

The disbursement comes amid continuing calls for increased investment in Nigeria’s tertiary education system, where institutions face demands for better-equipped classrooms, laboratories, workshops and other facilities to support academic activities.

However, the impact of the intervention will depend on how effectively the beneficiary institutions deploy the funds, complete approved projects and maintain the facilities provided.

The Federal Government expects the funding to help close critical infrastructure gaps and improve the learning environment for students and academic staff across the country.
