Federal University Dutse Gets NUC Approval for 30 New Programmes, Faculty of Law

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the commencement of academic activities by the Faculty of Law at Federal University Dutse (FUD), Jigawa State, alongside 30 new full-time academic programmes for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The approval was contained in a letter dated September 11, 2026, with reference number NUC/AP/F33/VOL.II/15, signed by the Director of Academic Planning at the NUC, Abubakar M. Girei, and addressed to the university's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ahmad Mohammed Gumel.

Disclosing the development to journalists in Dutse, the university's Acting Director of Public Affairs, Abdullahi Yahaya, said the newly approved programmes span several disciplines, including technology, health sciences, education, environmental studies, and finance.

Among the approved undergraduate programmes are B.Sc. Artificial Intelligence, B.Sc. Data Science, and B.Sc. Information Systems, alongside the university's new Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) programme in Common and Islamic Law. The commission also cleared a cluster of health-related programmes, including Community Health, Medical Laboratory Science, Human Nutrition and Dietetics, Physiotherapy, Radiography, and Optometry.

On the education side, the university secured approval for B.Sc.Ed. programmes in Physics, Biology, and Mathematics, along with B.Ed. programmes in Educational Management, Early Childhood Education, and Adult Education. Additional approvals cover B.A.Ed. programmes in Arabic and English, a B.Sc. in Applied Geology and Remote Sensing, and a B.Sc. in Science Laboratory Technology, with specialisation options in Biology Technology and Biochemistry Technology.

At the postgraduate level, the NUC approved Postgraduate Diploma, Master's, and PhD programmes in Forestry and Wildlife, Accounting, Treasury and Finance, and Banking and Finance, as well as Information Technology. The commission separately approved standalone Master's programmes in Banking and Finance, and in Accounting and Finance.

Yahaya said the newly approved programmes were designed to address evolving educational needs, particularly in technology, science education, and health-related fields, reflecting an attempt by the university to align its curriculum with current labour market and national development priorities.

Reacting to the approval, Vice-Chancellor Gumel described it as a significant milestone in the university's plan to expand its academic programmes, noting that the addition of AI, data science, and expanded allied health offerings positions FUD to compete more effectively with older, more established institutions in emerging fields of study.

The introduction of the Faculty of Law is expected to be particularly significant for the university and the wider region, addressing a longstanding demand for accessible legal education and training within Jigawa State and its surrounding areas, where opportunities for undergraduate legal study have historically been limited compared to Nigeria's older federal and state universities.

Federal University Dutse, established as one of Nigeria's newer generation of federal universities, has been gradually expanding its academic footprint since its founding, with this latest batch of NUC-approved programmes marking one of its more substantial single expansions to date. The addition of technology-focused programmes such as Artificial Intelligence and Data Science reflects a broader pattern among Nigerian universities in recent years, as institutions increasingly seek NUC approval for emerging-technology courses in response to growing student and industry demand for digital and computational skills.

With the 2026/2027 academic session set to be the first in which these 30 programmes, along with the new Faculty of Law, take formal effect, attention will now turn to how quickly the university can mobilise the staffing, infrastructure, and admissions processes needed to bring the expanded curriculum online, as FUD works to translate this regulatory approval into functioning academic offerings for incoming and returning students.
