Diri Urges Bayelsa Elders Council to Remain Objective, Politically Neutral

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has urged members of the Bayelsa State Elders Council to remain objective and politically neutral in carrying out their responsibilities.

Diri made the call while receiving members of the council who paid him a courtesy visit in Yenagoa.

He stressed the importance of the council maintaining its integrity and ensuring that its activities were guided by the collective interests of Bayelsa State rather than partisan considerations.

The governor said elders had an important role to play in preserving peace, resolving disputes and providing wise counsel to political leaders and citizens.

He urged the council to remain above political divisions and serve as a unifying platform for the people of the state.

Diri said the state needed the experience and wisdom of its elders, particularly at a time when political activities were intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He cautioned against actions or statements capable of creating unnecessary tension or deepening political divisions among Bayelsans.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peace, development and good governance, saying the support and constructive advice of elders remained important to achieving these objectives.

He urged the council to continue providing objective guidance and to promote dialogue among political actors regardless of their party affiliations.

Diri also assured the elders that his administration would remain open to constructive criticism and advice that would advance the interests of Bayelsa State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Bayelsa State Elders Council comprises prominent citizens with experience in politics, governance and other areas of public service.
