Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Biseni community in Yenagoa Local Government Area following unrest that disrupted peace and security in the area.
The directive, issued on Friday, takes immediate effect and followed briefings from security commanders on developments in the community.
The state government said the unrest involved individuals who barricaded roads leading into and within the community and set bonfires, restricting movement and raising concerns about public safety.
The development was announced in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah.
According to the statement, Diri ordered security operatives to take necessary measures to restore law and order and ensure that normal activities could resume in the community.
The governor also appealed to residents to remain calm and law-abiding while security agencies worked to address the situation.
He assured residents that the state government would continue to take measures to protect lives and property and maintain peace across the state.
The curfew is intended to contain the unrest and enable security personnel to stabilise the affected community.
The government did not immediately provide further details about the cause of the disturbance, the number of people involved or whether any arrests had been made.
Residents were urged to cooperate with security agencies and comply with the curfew as authorities work to restore normalcy in Biseni.
