Davido’s Father: What I Did After Hearing APC Gave N50,000 Per Vote

Dr. Adedeji Adeleke, father of Afrobeats singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has revealed what he did after hearing allegations that the All Progressives Congress gave voters as much as N50,000 per vote during the Osun State governorship election.

Adeleke made the disclosure in a viral video released a day after Governor Ademola Adeleke was re-elected governor of Osun State.

The businessman said he went into his room, knelt down and prayed after hearing reports about the amount of money allegedly being spent during the election.

He also appealed for the video to be shared widely so that Gboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and former governor of Osun State, would see it.

“Record me and play it to him. Let Oyetola hear,” he said.

Adeleke said he wanted Oyetola to understand what he believed was responsible for Governor Adeleke’s victory.

“And let him know the reason why we defeated him,” he added.

According to him, the victory was not achieved because his family was bigger or spent more money than its opponents.

“The only reason why we defeated Oyetola is not that we are bigger or that we spent more money than him. On election day, we didn’t spend any money,” he said.

Adeleke alleged that the APC spent a huge amount of money during the election, claiming that about N60 billion was spent and that votes were allegedly bought for as much as N50,000 in some areas.

“They spent N60 billion, as we heard. In some places, they bought most votes for as high as ₦50,000 for a single vote,” he said.

He said the reports prompted him to seek divine intervention rather than respond by increasing spending.

“On the day of the election, when I heard the kind of money they were spending, I went back to my little corner in my room, and I knelt down and I prayed to God,” he said.

Adeleke said his prayer was that voters would accept any money offered to them but still exercise their constitutional right according to their preferred candidate.

“I said: ‘God Almighty, let people collect their money, but let them still vote for Ademola Adeleke,’” he said.

He further explained that prayer remained an important part of his daily routine, noting that he regularly reads Bible passages and verses while praying.

He identified Isaiah 41:10 as one of the passages he reads during his daily prayers.

“And this is part of my testimony,” he said.

Adeleke added that the passage was among the reasons he remained confident and unafraid despite the political contest surrounding the election.

The August 15 election resulted in Adeleke’s re-election for a second term after he defeated APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji.

Adeleke secured 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji polled 444,815 votes. The African Democratic Congress candidate, Najeem Salaam, came third with 17,180 votes.

The allegations of vote-buying made by Adeleke remain claims and would require independent verification or findings by relevant authorities.
