CWG: Nigeria’s Goodness Nwachukwu Breaks Own World Record, Wins Commonwealth Games Discus Gold

Nigeria’s Goodness Nwachukwu produced another historic performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, breaking her own F42 Women’s Discus Throw world record to win the gold medal.

The 27-year-old para-athlete sealed victory on July 29 with a remarkable final throw of 39.66 metres, surpassing her previous world record by more than three metres and reaffirming her status as one of the world’s leading para-athletes.

Nwachukwu dominated the competition from the opening rounds before producing her record-breaking effort with her final attempt, sending the Nigerian contingent into celebration.

Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye claimed the silver medal after throwing 38.52 metres, while Australia’s Bree Cronin secured bronze with a best effort of 36.00 metres.

The latest achievement adds another milestone to an already remarkable career for the Nigerian star.

At the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, Nwachukwu broke her own world record twice on her way to winning gold. Her latest feat in Glasgow marks the fourth time she has rewritten the world record in the F42 women’s discus throw.

Speaking after the competition, an emotional Nwachukwu described the achievement as one of the greatest moments of her career.

“I feel like I am on top of the world. I feel so great. I feel so wow. I was like, ‘Ah, what,’ and I started shouting,” she said.

She also expressed appreciation to her supporters back home in Nigeria.

“To my fans in Nigeria, I love you all and I can’t wait to see you. Love you,” she added.

Nwachukwu’s victory further strengthens Nigeria’s impressive outing in para-sports at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where Nigerian athletes have continued to deliver outstanding performances across several events.
