CWG: Finucane Makes Commonwealth Games History With Fourth Track Gold in Glasgow

Welsh cyclist Emma Finucane etched her name into Commonwealth Games history on Sunday by becoming the first sprint rider to win four track cycling gold medals at a single edition of the Games.

The 23-year-old completed a remarkable clean sweep of her events after claiming victory in the women’s keirin at the Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, Scotland.

Her latest triumph added to the gold medals she had already secured in the team sprint, individual sprint and 1,000-metre time trial, making it four consecutive days of gold medal-winning performances.

Finucane’s victory came at the expense of New Zealand’s Olympic champion Ellesse Andrews, who entered the race as the defending Commonwealth Games keirin champion but had to settle for the silver medal after being outpaced in the final.

The achievement places Finucane in a class of her own in Commonwealth Games cycling history.

Although New Zealand cyclist Aaron Gate won four gold medals at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, his titles were split between three track events and one road race.

Finucane is therefore the first athlete to capture four gold medals exclusively in track sprint disciplines at a single edition of the Games.

She also surpassed previous sprint cycling records held by Australian great Anna Meares and New Zealand’s Andrews, both of whom had won three track cycling titles during one Commonwealth Games in 2010 and 2022 respectively.

Beyond her global achievement, Finucane also rewrote Welsh sporting history.

She became the first Welsh woman to win four gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games and overtook Para-sprinter Olivia Breen to become Wales’ most decorated female athlete in Commonwealth Games history.

Despite her historic accomplishment, weightlifter David Morgan remains Wales’ most successful Commonwealth Games athlete overall, having amassed nine gold medals and three silver medals during his career.

Finucane’s latest success also boosted Wales’ performance on the overall medals table.

The nation finished the Games with a total of 31 medals comprising nine gold, 10 silver and 12 bronze.

Her outstanding performances throughout Glasgow 2026 have established her as one of the biggest stars of the competition and further strengthened her reputation as one of the world’s leading track sprint cyclists ahead of future international championships and Olympic competitions.
