Cleric Appeals to Sule Over Keana’s Detention
A cleric has appealed to Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule to intervene in the continued detention of media activist Abdulkarim Allanana, popularly known as Oscar Keana.
A cleric has appealed to Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule to intervene in the continued detention of media activist Abdulkarim Allanana, popularly known as Oscar Keana.
Allanana, who is also identified as the leader of the Indigenous People of Nasarawa State, was remanded by a Federal High Court sitting in Lafia following his arraignment by the Department of State Services DSS.
He is facing a two-count charge bordering on alleged false information concerning the Nasarawa State Government.
The appeal for the governor’s intervention comes amid concerns over the length of Allanana’s detention and the circumstances surrounding the case.
The court has adjourned proceedings until November 26 to hear his bail application.
Reports indicate that Allanana was recently transferred from the Lafia Custodial Centre to the Medium Security Custodial Centre following a directive from the Nigerian Correctional Service.
The cleric urged Governor Sule to consider the matter in the interest of justice and ensure that the activist’s fundamental rights were protected while the legal process continued.
The development has drawn attention to the balance between the enforcement of laws against alleged false publications and the protection of citizens’ rights to expression and due process.
Allanana’s case remains before the court, and allegations against him have not been established by a final judicial determination.
