Civic Education Vital for Future Leaders, Says Ekiti Commissioner
An Ekiti Commissioner has stressed the importance of civic education in preparing young Nigerians to become responsible citizens and future leaders.
The Ekiti State Commissioner for Education has emphasised the importance of civic education in preparing students to become responsible citizens and future leaders.
The commissioner said civic education was essential to equipping young people with the knowledge, values and skills required to participate meaningfully in society and contribute to national development.
The commissioner made the remarks while highlighting the importance of teaching young people about their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
According to the commissioner, education should go beyond academic knowledge to include the development of character, patriotism, respect for the rule of law and responsible civic participation.
The commissioner said students needed to understand the importance of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, accountability and respect for other people's rights from an early age.
Civic education also provides young people with an understanding of democratic principles, governance and their roles in shaping society. Research on civic education in Nigeria has similarly identified civic knowledge, skills and positive civic dispositions as important components of responsible citizenship.
The commissioner urged schools and teachers to make civic education practical and engaging, rather than limiting it to classroom instruction.
The call is particularly important as young Nigerians increasingly participate in discussions on governance, social issues and the future of the country.
The commissioner said developing informed and responsible citizens would strengthen democratic values, promote national unity and help prepare a generation capable of providing effective leadership.
The commissioner therefore encouraged stakeholders in the education sector, parents and teachers to work together to ensure that students acquire the values and civic knowledge needed to contribute positively to society.
