Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has called for Manchester City to be stripped of the titles they won during the period in which an independent commission found the club guilty of serious Premier League financial breaches.

The commission found City guilty of all charges relating to serious financial breaches between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons.

During that period, the club won three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups and one Community Shield.

Carragher said the trophies won during the period should be removed from Manchester City’s record, although he questioned whether the honours should automatically be awarded to the teams that finished runners-up.

He said the consequences extended beyond medals and trophies, arguing that players and supporters of clubs that finished behind City had lost the experience of winning those competitions at the time.

Carragher also called for Manchester City’s owners to leave their positions, saying the club’s ownership should face consequences for the findings of the commission.

The former England defender said the case had raised questions about the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test, particularly in relation to the continued involvement of City’s owners.

Manchester City have denied the allegations and confirmed that they will appeal the independent commission’s decision. The club has until October 2 to lodge its appeal.

The commission found that City had arranged what it described as “sham” contracts with commercial partners as part of a disguised funding scheme, artificially inflating the club’s revenues by £830 million.

It also found that the club had filed accounts that concealed the true state of its finances, breached Premier League and UEFA spending limits, and failed to co-operate with the Premier League’s investigation.

Manchester City Chief Executive Ferran Soriano rejected the findings in a video message to staff and players, describing the Premier League’s case as a “conspiracy theory” and maintaining that the club had evidence supporting its position.

The Premier League is expected to hold a separate hearing to determine sanctions. Potential penalties include fines, points deductions and other sporting sanctions, although no final punishment has yet been announced.
