CAF Reverses Edo Queens WAFU B Victory

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has annulled Edo Queens’ 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the final of the 2026 WAFU Zone B Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament.

The decision means the Nigerian champions will have to return to the field to complete the final, which ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.

The match, played on September 5 at the 4th of August Stadium in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, went directly to penalties after regulation time, with Edo Queens winning 4-1.

However, Ampem Darkoa subsequently protested the procedure, arguing that the competition regulations required extra time to be played before penalties.

CAF’s Organising Committee for Women’s Football upheld the protest, ruling that the penalty shootout was conducted contrary to the regulations.

Under the applicable rules, a final that remains level after 90 minutes must proceed to two 15-minute periods of extra time. A penalty shootout can only be used if the teams remain level after extra time.

CAF therefore annulled the penalty shootout and its 4-1 result, while retaining the 2-2 scoreline from the original 90 minutes.

The continental body rejected a complete replay of the match, stating that the first 90 minutes were validly played and that there was no reason to invalidate that portion of the contest.

Instead, CAF ordered the final to resume from the beginning of extra time, with the score still 2-2.

The teams will play two 15-minute periods of extra time. If the scores remain level after the additional 30 minutes, a new penalty shootout will determine the winner.

CAF also directed that, as far as practically and legally possible, the continuation should maintain the sporting conditions that existed at the end of regulation time. This includes player eligibility, disciplinary status, substitutions and the match officials.

WAFU Zone B will determine the date, kick-off time and venue for the continuation in consultation with CAF, the Nigeria Football Federation and the Ghana Football Association.

The eventual winner will represent WAFU Zone B at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament.

The ruling leaves Edo Queens’ earlier penalty victory without sporting effect and reopens a final they had initially won more than three weeks ago.
