Bomb Threat Diverts London-Sofia Flight to Hungary
A Wizz Air flight travelling from London to Sofia was diverted to Budapest after receiving a bomb threat, prompting a Hungarian Gripen fighter jet to escort the aircraft to safety.
A Wizz Air passenger aircraft travelling from London to Sofia, Bulgaria, was diverted to Budapest, Hungary, on Monday following a bomb threat received while the plane was in flight.
The Airbus A321neo departed London Luton Airport at 8:33am and was scheduled to arrive at Sofia International Airport at approximately 1:25pm local time before the threat prompted its diversion.
Hungary’s Defence Minister, Romulusz Ruszin-Szendi, said a Gripen fighter jet was deployed within minutes to escort the aircraft to Budapest.
The plane landed safely at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport at 12:08pm, where it was directed to a designated stand for security checks.
Wizz Air confirmed the incident, saying the threat was received during the flight and that the diversion was carried out in line with established security procedures.
The airline said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities, who began inspecting the aircraft and conducting additional security checks involving passengers and crew.
Hungarian police also implemented further security measures following the aircraft’s arrival.
However, details surrounding the threat, including its origin and whether any suspicious objects were discovered, remained unclear as of Monday afternoon.
Flight-tracking data showed that the aircraft had been diverted towards Hungary while flying over Bosnia and Herzegovina, abandoning its scheduled route to the Bulgarian capital.
The incident prompted a security response at Budapest airport, while authorities continued investigations into the reported threat.
Wizz Air reiterated that the safety of its passengers and crew remained its priority.
