Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has expressed condolences to the families of the 25 people who died in the Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State.

Atiku described the crash as a painful tragedy, saying no words could adequately comfort the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.

He expressed his condolences in a statement following the crash of the Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The aircraft, with registration number NAF 931, was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos when it crashed on Monday.

The Nigerian Air Force confirmed on Tuesday that all 25 people on board died in the accident, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers. The Service subsequently released the names of the victims.

Atiku commiserated with the families, colleagues and friends of the deceased, as well as the Nigerian Air Force and the wider Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He described the loss of the personnel and passengers as devastating, urging Nigerians to support the bereaved families as they come to terms with the tragedy.

The former vice president also acknowledged the service and sacrifice of members of the Nigerian Air Force, particularly those who lost their lives while carrying out their duties.

He prayed for the repose of the souls of the deceased and for strength and comfort for their families and colleagues.

The crash has prompted investigations by the relevant authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the accident and determine its cause.

The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has directed a comprehensive investigation, while the NAF has urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid speculation.

A condolence register has also been opened at the NAF Headquarters in Abuja for government officials, diplomatic representatives, security chiefs and members of the public wishing to pay their respects to the victims.
