Army Urges Objective Reporting of Military Activities
The Nigerian Army has urged journalists to verify information and report military activities objectively to curb misinformation and strengthen public understanding of its operations.
The General Officer Commanding GOC, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. Auwalu Mahmuda, has urged journalists to verify information before publication and report military activities objectively.
Mahmuda made the call when the Chairman of the Oyo State Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Mr Yinka Adeniran, led members of the chapel on a courtesy visit to the headquarters of 2 Division at Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan.
The GOC stressed the need for stronger collaboration between the military and the media to promote accurate reporting and curb the spread of misinformation, disinformation and fake news.
He described the media as an important partner in keeping the public informed about the activities of the Nigerian Army, saying credible information was essential to ensuring proper understanding of military operations.
Mahmuda specifically urged journalists to verify reports concerning military operations before publishing them, noting that inaccurate information could affect public perception and operational activities.
He assured the journalists that 2 Division remained open to professional engagement with the media and would continue to explore ways of strengthening cooperation.
Earlier, Adeniran commended officers and soldiers of the division for their sacrifices and commitment to national security.
He recalled the recent rescue of students in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, saying the operation underscored the importance of effective communication and cooperation between the military and the media.
Adeniran said the chapel was interested in deepening its relationship with the division through regular professional engagements, training opportunities and improved access to verified information.
He said closer collaboration would enhance journalists’ understanding of military operations and contribute to responsible reportage.
The chairman expressed the chapel’s readiness to work with the Army in promoting credible information and responsible journalism.
