APC Mocks Amaechi Over Claim He Could Not Afford Mother’s Drugs
The APC has criticised ADC Vice-Presidential Candidate Rotimi Amaechi over his claim that economic hardship under the Tinubu administration made it difficult for him to afford medication for his late mother.
The All Progressives Congress APC has criticised African Democratic Congress ADC Vice-Presidential Candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, over his claim that he could not afford medication for his late mother because of economic hardship under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The APC, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, accused Amaechi of depending on public office and mocked his claim that he had become financially constrained after leaving government.
Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers and former Minister of Transportation, made the claim during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.
He alleged that the rising cost of medicines following Tinubu’s economic policies made it difficult for him to purchase the drugs his mother needed before her death.
The former governor also blamed the administration’s economic policies for the broader hardship facing Nigerians, particularly rising costs of transportation, rent, taxes and medication.
Reacting, the APC questioned how Amaechi, who served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, governor and minister for several years, could become unable to provide medication for his mother after leaving public office.
The party also accused him of seeking the 2027 ADC vice-presidential ticket as a means of returning to public office and benefiting from public resources.
The APC said Amaechi’s comments showed what it described as an excessive dependence on political office, arguing that Nigerians should not be expected to provide public positions as a means of sustaining politicians after leaving government.
It further mocked the former governor by suggesting that he seek employment in his hometown that would enable him to provide for himself and his family.
Amaechi has repeatedly criticised the Tinubu administration over the rising cost of living and the removal of the petrol subsidy. He has also challenged the government to demonstrate the benefits of the subsidy removal to ordinary Nigerians.
The APC’s comments followed a separate criticism by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who also questioned Amaechi’s claim that he was unable to afford his mother’s medication and accused him of politicising her death.
The political dispute comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, in which Amaechi is the ADC vice-presidential candidate alongside former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.
