APC Chair Says PDP, APGA, Accord Back Tinubu’s 2027 Re-election Bid
APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda says the PDP, APGA and Accord are supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign, while a rival PDP faction has rejected any alliance with the ruling party.
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, says the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Accord Party are backing President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in office ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yilwatda made the assertion on Tuesday after briefing Tinubu on preparations for the formal launch of the APC presidential campaign in Kaduna on Saturday, October 24. He was accompanied by the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abdulaziz Yari.
The APC chairman said politicians and groups associated with parties that had previously defeated the ruling party in elections were now working with it to support Tinubu’s re-election bid.
He described the development as evidence of expanding political support for the President, adding that preparations for the campaign launch had been completed, with state structures, committees and party members ready for mobilisation.
Yilwatda said the campaign council had finalised arrangements for the Kaduna event, which will mark the beginning of the party’s nationwide presidential campaign activities.
Speaking separately, Yari said the APC would conduct an issue-based campaign centred on the Tinubu administration’s record in office rather than personal attacks against political opponents.
He said the campaign would present the government’s policies, programmes and achievements to Nigerians, urging voters to assess its performance before deciding whether to grant it another term.
Yari added that the campaign council would promote continuity by highlighting what the administration had accomplished since assuming office.
The APC’s claim of cross-party support, however, has been challenged by a faction of the PDP led by Tanimu Turaki, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. The faction has rejected any alliance with the ruling party and denied that the PDP, as a party, supports Tinubu’s re-election.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the faction said the opposition should provide an alternative to the incumbent government rather than collaborate with it. It also described the reported alignment as a threat to electoral democracy.
The faction further argued that those promoting support for Tinubu did not represent the position of what it called the party’s principled members. It said it was awaiting the Court of Appeal’s decision in the ongoing dispute over the PDP’s leadership.
Meanwhile, APGA National Chairman Sly Ezeokenwa had said in March that the party would not field a presidential candidate and intended to adopt Tinubu for the 2027 election. Accord presidential candidate Christopher Imumolen also withdrew from the race in August and endorsed the President.
The reported alignments come as the APC expands its presidential campaign council to include politicians from outside the ruling party, amid disagreements within opposition parties over participation in Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
