Amupitan Visits Abdulsalami in Minna, Says Nigerians’ Votes Will Count in 2027 Elections

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has assured Nigerians that every valid vote cast during the 2027 general election will count, reaffirming the commission’s commitment to conducting free, fair and credible polls.

Amupitan gave the assurance on Friday during a courtesy visit to former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), at his residence in Minna, Niger State.

The INEC chairman described Abdulsalami as the “father of democracy in Nigeria,” noting that his successful transition from military to civilian rule in 1999 laid the foundation for the country’s current democratic system.

He said the electoral commission regards the former military leader not only as a respected statesman but also as a dependable supporter of INEC’s efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

Amupitan also commended Abdulsalami’s leadership of the National Peace Committee, describing the committee’s peace accord initiative as a major contributor to peaceful elections and political stability.

According to him, the initiative has continued to encourage political parties and candidates to commit themselves to non-violence before, during and after elections.

He described the visit as “a pilgrimage of appreciation” in recognition of Abdulsalami’s contributions to democratic governance, peaceful coexistence and credible electoral processes.

The INEC chairman stressed that despite the challenges facing the commission, it remains determined to protect the integrity of the electoral process.

“The commission’s determination under my leadership is to see ordinary Nigerians go out and vote, confident that their votes would be duly counted and reflected in the outcome of elections,” Amupitan said.

He added that ensuring that the will of the electorate prevails remains the commission’s foremost responsibility.

Amupitan also reminded Nigerians that the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections will take place on February 6.

During the visit, he congratulated Abdulsalami on his recent 84th birthday and wished him continued good health and strength.

Responding, the former Head of State thanked the INEC chairman for the visit and urged Nigerians to support the electoral commission as preparations for the 2027 general election continue.

Abdulsalami emphasised that credible elections require cooperation from political parties, candidates, security agencies and citizens, expressing confidence that peaceful participation would further strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
