The opening round of group-stage fixtures at the FIFA World Cup produced highly contrasting outcomes for the African continent's record ten representatives. Across their first ten matchups, African nations combined for a total of two victories, three draws, and five losses, collectively conceding 16 goals while managing to find the back of the net seven times.

The initial stage of the tournament delivered heavy blows to several major teams from the continent. Tunisia suffered the most punishing defeat, falling 5–1 to an aggressive Swedish side, while Senegal struggled defensively in a 3–1 loss against France. Elsewhere, South Africa’s campaign opened with a 2–0 loss to Mexico, and Algeria was soundly beaten 3–0 by a Lionel Messi-led Argentina.

Despite those tough setbacks, the opening round also featured historic and hard-fought high points for Africa. Ivory Coast kicked off their tournament successfully by securing a hard-earned 1–0 win over Ecuador, and Ghana replicated that identical success with a narrow 1–0 triumph against Panama.

Meanwhile, several African underdogs successfully frustrated global football powerhouses to earn crucial points. Morocco displayed incredible tactical discipline to secure a commendable 1–1 draw against Brazil, a feat matched by Egypt, who held a highly rated Belgium squad to the exact same 1–1 scoreline. DR Congo also carved out a historic milestone, holding Portugal to a 1–1 tie to secure their first-ever World Cup point. In a defensive masterclass, Cape Verde held heavyweights Spain to a goalless 0–0 draw, triggering wild celebrations.

With the first ten matches officially wrapped up, the focus pivots immediately to the second round of group fixtures. Action resumes on Thursday, featuring a crucial encounter where South Africa takes on Czechia in a match that could dictate their survival hopes in Group A.
