Abia Students Emerge Best in Qatar Debate Competition
Abia students have emerged winners at an international debate competition in Qatar, showcasing Nigeria’s growing talent.
Students from Abia State have emerged as the best performers at a debate competition in Qatar, recording a major international achievement for the state and Nigeria.
The students represented Nigeria at the competition, where they competed against participants from other countries and demonstrated strong skills in public speaking, critical thinking and argumentation.
Their performance has attracted attention to the growing culture of debating in Abia, where schools and education-focused organisations have continued to promote debate as a tool for developing students’ confidence and intellectual abilities.
Abia has previously participated in international school debate competitions, including the World Schools Debating Championship. Historical records show that Nigerian teams from states including Abia have taken part in international debate events and represented the country on the global stage.
The latest achievement is expected to further encourage investment in debating and other extracurricular academic activities across schools in the state.
Debate competitions provide students with opportunities to develop research, communication and analytical skills while exposing them to issues beyond their immediate environment.
The achievement also comes amid renewed interest in academic competitions involving Nigerian students at national and international levels.
In May 2026, students from Young Amadeus University, Amizi, Abia State, secured third place in the inaugural National Universities Commission Virtual Debating Championship. The institution competed against 73 universities from across Nigeria in the British Parliamentary debating format.
The latest success in Qatar further highlights the competitive ability of students from the state and the potential for Nigerian students to excel when given opportunities to participate in international academic programmes.
Education stakeholders have consistently encouraged schools to support activities such as debating, noting their contribution to students’ communication skills, confidence and ability to engage constructively with different viewpoints.
The students’ performance is therefore being viewed as a source of pride for Abia and a boost for efforts to promote intellectual development among young Nigerians.
The achievement also underscores the importance of providing students with platforms where they can compete internationally and develop skills that extend beyond conventional classroom learning.
As debate continues to gain attention among Nigerian schools and universities, the Abia students’ performance in Qatar adds another international milestone to the state’s growing record in competitive debating.
