Students from public schools in Abia State, representing Nigeria, have emerged overall champions at the 2026 International Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, winning four major trophies and 12 laurels after defeating teams from Jordan, India, Qatar, the Philippines, Kenya and others. The historic victory has been hailed as proof that Governor Alex Otti's education reforms are producing world-class scholars.
Students from public schools in Abia State, representing Nigeria, have emerged as overall champions at the 2026 International Schools Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, carting home four major trophies and 12 laurels after competing against students from six countries to clinch the biggest prize of the tournament, the Best International School Debate Team award.
The championship, coordinated by the Vocara Institute and hosted by the QatarDebate Centre at Georgetown University, Doha, brought together over 84 groups from eight countries. Team Nigeria, presented by Presidential School Debate Nigeria and fully represented by Abia public school students, competed against teams from Jordan, India, Qatar, the Philippines, Kenya and others. The team scaled through the preliminary rounds, edging out students from the Philippines, Jordan, India and Qatar to reach the finals.
At the end of the championship, Team Nigeria won the Best International School Debate Team award, described as the biggest award of the tournament. Other awards won by the team included Overall Best Team in the Junior Category, Best Leadership Award, Best Debater Award and 12 laurels for outstanding performance.
The team, led by the Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board, Ambassador Lydia Onuoha, and representatives of the Presidency and Presidential School Debate Nigeria, comprised Christian Chinweotitom Esther, Chikodi Maureen, Akamnonu Franklin, Ifeanyichukwu Prisca and Simon Divine. Their performance has been described as a masterclass that placed Abia State firmly on the global map of academic excellence.
Reacting to the victory, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alex Otti, Ukoha Ukoha, said the historic win had once again demonstrated the strength of Abia's new education model under the governor and the intellectual capacity of students in Abia public schools. "This historic victory has once again demonstrated the strength of Abia's new education model under Gov. Alex Otti and the intellectual capacity of students in Abia public schools. The Abia Debate Team has made Abia and Nigeria proud," he said.
Also reacting, the state Commissioner for Basic Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, expressed elation at the outcome, describing it as evidence that the government's transformation of the education sector was yielding results. "We feel elated now. What we are doing is that we are transforming the educational sector, and this outcome now is one of the expectations, and they are indicators that what we are doing is working," he said. Ubochi disclosed that the state government would host and celebrate the victorious team upon their return, alongside other students who had excelled in various national competitions. He revealed that one Abia student had also won the national essay competition organised by the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools. "So we have a handful of them that we're going to celebrate. So we are waiting for them to come back. We will organise when we will celebrate all the contingents that have represented us well in one form of competition or the other," he added.
The QatarDebate Centre, founded by the Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development in 2008, is Qatar's national debating organisation and has organised international schools debating competitions that bring together students from different countries to engage with contemporary global and societal issues. The centre provides a platform for young people to develop critical thinking, public speaking and leadership skills while engaging with peers from diverse cultural backgrounds.
The victory in Doha represents more than a collection of trophies for Nigeria. It demonstrates the capacity of young Nigerians from public schools to participate meaningfully in international intellectual competitions when provided with the necessary preparation, mentorship and institutional support. In Abia State, debate competitions have increasingly been used to encourage critical thinking, confidence, leadership and academic engagement among secondary school students. The success of the Abia team is expected to inspire greater investment in public education and debate programmes across the state and the country. As the students return home to a hero's welcome, their achievement stands as a powerful reminder that with the right support and opportunities, Nigerian children can compete with and defeat the best in the world.
