A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University AAU, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel in the town, with three people arrested by the police in connection with the incident.
The deceased, a lecturer in the university’s Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, was found lifeless in a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, on Monday.
The Edo State Police Command said it received a report about the incident at about 8 p.m. on October 5.
According to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and was accompanied by a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
Ikoedem said the woman was sent out to purchase water and, upon her return, found the lecturer lying lifeless in the room.
The police subsequently arrested the woman, alongside the hotel owner and manager, as part of investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death.
The command said Uwuigbe’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary while investigations continued to establish what led to his death.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, also clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the institution.
The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.
